Sonora Will Start Worker Furloughs
Sonora, CA – Many City of Sonora workers will start taking mandatory furlough days this week.
Sonora City Administrator Tim Miller says that workers classified as miscellaneous (i.e. Public Works, Community Development and Administration) will be furloughed on the third Friday of the month through June. This means that City Hall will be closed on those days. It will result in an approximate five percent reduction in worker salaries. The furloughs do not include public safety agencies.
On a related note, all city employees will forgo cost of living adjustments this year, which would have resulted in a salary increase of around three percent. Employees will also be required to start paying into the PERS retirement program.
The changes came following negotiations between Miller and the various bargaining groups. The changes will save the city approximately $160-thousand.
