Another Missile Launch Lights Up Skies

Sponsored by:

A launch tonight from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the central coast has provided Californians with a colorful light show.

U.S. Missile Defense Agency Lieutenant Colonel Rick Lehner says a modified Minuteman Two with a mock warhead and a specified number of decoys were launched from Vandenberg at 7 p.m.

Lehner says the missile successfully made contact 28 minutes later with an interceptor missile launched from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

It was the seventh such test for the Missile Defense Agency, of which five have been successful. Lehner says tonight’s launch was the agency’s fourth consecutive successful test.

Witnesses reported seeing the launch’s colorful contrail from the San Francisco Bay area south to Orange County.
