Hundreds of thousands of Californians have signed on to a campaign to recall Governor Gray Davis.
Organizers of the recall drive say they have collected about 600,000 of the 897,000 signatures they need to bring the matter before voters. The recall drive has received a big financial boost from Congressman Darrell Issa, who has made it clear he´d like to replace Davis. The San Diego County Republican so far has contributed 645,000 dollars to the recall effort.
Republicans accuse Davis of mismanaging the state and lying to voters about the size of California´s deficit, which is projected to be as much as 38 billion dollars by next year.
Democrats say Issa is too conservative for heavily Democratic California.
