Real ID Act Clears House

Sponsored by:

Legislation designed to tighten driver´s license security has cleared the House of Representatives.

Co-sponsored by Mother Lode Congressman Dan Lungren, the Real ID Act establishes strict security standards for attaining a driver´s license. Lungren says the legislation is designed to impede travel by alleged terrorists by making it more difficult for states to extend driver´s licenses to people that are in the country illegally.

The resolution would also finance the construction of a 3-mile long border security fence in San Diego. The proposal is backed by the White House but will likely face an uphill battle in the Senate.

The Real ID Act includes several anti-terrorist provisions that were passed in the wake of the report issued by the 9-11 Commission last year, but were withdrawn due to opposition in the Senate.
