Alarming Jump In DUI Arrests

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Sonora Police Department says there was an alarming increase in driving under the influence accidents and arrests during the first six months of 2012. Between January and June of 2011, the Sonora Police Department only had 27 arrests for DUI. This year, during the same time period, the Department made 60 arrests. There has also been a 19% hike in DUI accidents.

The Department says not only is the number of arrests up, but the blood alcohol level in those arrested has skyrocketed to an average of .15, which is almost twice the legal limit.

Police report motorists are helping to boost the number of DUI arrests as well. The Department says it’s getting more calls from motorists reporting suspected drunk drivers on the roadways. They say most of the calls have resulted in arrests. The Sonora Police Department encourages all motorists to report drunk drivers.

Just a reminder, Police say if you call 911 on your cell phone in the Sonora area, you will reach the Merced CHP Office. They will then transfer you to the Sonora Police Department. You can dial Sonora Police Department directly at 532-8141 to report suspected drunk drivers.

Sonora Police say they recently sent an officer to special training to deal with drunk drivers. They say that training has paid off as the officer has already made several arrests related to information gained from that class.
