Lindh Receives No Sympathy
So far the main defense of 20-year-old John Walker Lindh on charges of conspiring to kill fellow Americans in Afghanistan, has been carried forward by his parents. After a long silence following his capture, his mother said she loves him unconditionally. His father says the young man from Marin County, California captured with Taliban soldiers “loves America.”
Facing a possible life sentence at a trial in Alexandria, Virginia, Lindh also faces overwelmingly unfavorable public opinion. Last month a Gallup poll showed only three percent of Americans thought Lindh should be released. Nearly 70 percent thought he should be imprisoned or executed.
