Election Reforms Sought
Secretary of State Kevin Shelley is proposing election reforms to avoid problems like those that plagued Florida in 2000 and 2002. He says California should end all use of punch-card voting machines of the sort that made “hanging chads” famous.
Incompletely punched voting cards ultimately required a Supreme Court decision to install George W. Bush as president. The state also should provide more training for election officials, and more information for voters. Confusion among Florida voters in how to properly complete their punch cards added to the state´s woes.
The public has a month to make suggestions before the state seeks federal money to begin the modernization.
