Vehicle Emissions Standards Fought in Court
Sponsored by:
Automobile manufacturers filed a lawsuit today in Fresno to block California´s tough vehicle emissions standards.
The manufacturers argue in their lawsuit that the state´s standards, which could set a coast-to-coast precedent, must by law be the responsibility of the federal government.
The suit had been expected ever since the regulations were adopted.
California´s regulations are set to be phased in beginning in 2009.
They would cut exhaust emissions in cars and light trucks by 25 percent and in larger trucks and S-U-Vs by 18 percent, according to California Air Resources Board estimates.
