Calaveras Supervisors Consider Medical Pot Dispensary

Sponsored by:

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors meet Monday with a couple of hot-button issues on the agenda.

The Board is scheduled to consider an ordinance that would allow for the establishment of a medical marijuana dispensary in the rural county. Voter approved Proposition 215 ushered in a number of medicinal marijuana dispensaries throughout the state. Calaveras County Sheriff Dennis Downum says he doesn´t have a problem with legitimately severely ill people acquiring and using cannabis, but believes abuse of the law is rampant. Angels Police Chief Tony Tachiera says he agrees and fears that marijuana too often serves as gateway drug to harder, more debilitating drugs. Supervisors are also scheduled to consider adjusting the schedule of terms served by members of the county´s planning commission to match the terms of Supervisors.
