Update: Fire In Valley Springs Area, Mandatory Evacuations Lifted

Update at 7:19 p.m.: CAL Fire reports crews are making progress on the 150 acre Campo Fire burning in Calaveras County. They add that while some containment has been gained, they have not had time yet to calculate the exact percentage. Additionally, an evacuation warning remains in effect at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way with mandatory evacuations lifted in the last hour for the Loera Hills area and include the west sides of Loera Hills Road and portions of Watertown Road.

The fire was ignited by an escaped debris burn where the flames spread to grass along the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco, according to CAL Fire spokesperson Walynda Miller.  She adds that crews will continue working toward containment overnight.

Update at 6:35 pm.: Fire crews are getting a handle on the 150-acre blaze that has no containment. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Stark tells Clarke Broadcasting that the mandatory evacuations have been lifted for the Loera Hills area and include the west sides of Loera Hills Road and portions of Watertown Road. However, the evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way.

Update at 5:50 p.m.:  While CAL Fire reports crews are getting a handle on the Campo fire, evacuations remain in place for the Loera Hills area and include the west sides of Loera Hills Road and portions of Watertown Road.

CAL Fire spokesperson Emily Kilgore updates, “The Campo Fire is 150 acre with zero percent containment. It currently has a moderate rate of spread.”

An evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way. An evacuation center has been set up at Calaveras High School located at 350 High School Street, San Andreas inside the Flock Gym. CAL Fire details that the blaze is the result of an escaped debris burn. The flames spread to grass in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco. The CHP has closed Buckboard, Water town and Paloma roads at Campo Seco Road. CAL Fire asks the public to stay out of the area.

Update at 5:25 p.m.:  CAL Fire reports that crews are making progress on the Campo Fire burning in Calaveras County. It remains at 30 acres in size. The flames had been spreading east towards Valley Springs as can be seen in pictures in the image box. There are still mandatory evacuations and road closures in the area (further details below). Update at 4:20 p.m.:  The Campo Fire burning in Calaveras County has grown from 20 to 30 acres. It is the result of an escaped debris burn, according to CAL Fire. The flames spread to grass in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco and continue to head east towards the Valley Springs area.

There are mandatory evacuations issued in the Loera Hills area and include the west sides of Loera Hills Road and portions of Watertown Road.  (see map below)  An evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way. An evacuation center has been set up at Calaveras High School located at 350 High School Street, San Andreas inside the Flock Gym.

Update at 3:30 P.m.:  The Campo Fire has grown to 25 acres in size and mandatory evacuations have been issued. Those are in the Loera Hills area of Campo Seco in Calaveras County. That includes the west sides of Loera and Paloma roads. An evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way. An evacuation center is being set up at Calaveras High School in San Andreas.

CAL Fire reports the flames, which are burning in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco, continue to move at a moderate rate of spread to the east towards Valley Springs. There is zero containment at this time. Resources on scene include 12 engines, 2 helicopters, 2 air tankers, 1 air attack, 2 dozers, and 3 hand crews. Additional resources have been called to the scene and CAL Fire is requesting that the public stay out of the area.

Update at 2:45 p.m.: CAL Fire spokesperson Walynda Miller tells Clarke Broadcasting that the Campo Fire in Calaveras County is the result of an escaped debris burn. It remains 5 acres in size and burning at a moderate rate of spread in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco. An evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way.

The CHP reports that the intersection of Water Town and Campo Seco Road has been closed to traffic.

Update at 2:30 p.m.: CAL Fire has dubbed the blaze the “Campo Fire.” It is burning in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco. An evacuation warning remains at the south end of Buckboard Lane and along Old Doggie Way. It is 5 acres in size and moving at a moderate rate of spread. Additional resources including more aircraft have been called to the scene.

Update at 1:55 p.m.: CAL Fire dispatch reports that the fire burning in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in Campo Seco. It is 5 acres in size and there is an evacuation warning in place. They add that flames are heading uphill in the brush at a moderate rate of spread.

Calaveras County Sheriffs Sgt. Greg Stark tells Clarke Broadcasting that the evacuation warning is for residents on the south end of Buckboard and Old Doggie Way.

Cal-Fire reports the flames broke out in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane near Campo Seco Road in the Campo Seco. There is no word of the fire’s size, the rate of spread, or if any structures or threatened. We will bring you more details as soon they come into the NewsCenter.
