Cassina Video Studio 90% Complete

These days, education isn´t restricted to just reading, writing, and ´rithmetic.

Modern-day students are learning to shoot, edit and produce video programs with the help of ComCast Cable Channel 8, the local public access channel.

Space for the studio is provided by Cassina High School, studio equipment by Cable 8, and Mr. Randal Lee´s classroom houses digital editing software on both Macintosh and Windows computers.

While some of the money for the equipment came from a grant from the Sonora Area Foundation, Channel 8 president Ron Garside told me the majority of funding for equipment comes from Channel 8´s revenue.

“So I said, well, why don´t we try to put together a combination where we find a classroom that can be used for a television studio, where the school students at Cassina can come and learn these things from the people who have the expertise at Channel 8,” Garside says.

Garside added a carpentry class from the school actually helped construct some parts of the video studio.

As for the student perspective, Joseph Wild said he enjoys his video-related homework.

“We get good experience with editing equipment and sound boards and the cameras and tripods, and I get to teach other students not only how to run but how to… keep up on maintenence,” Wild said.

Manager Doug Geary says the work on the studio may not be completely finished, but they´re getting there.

“It´s about 90 percent, I´d say. We still have a little bit of production equipment to be installed, the editing systems need to be installed, but the studio space is essentially finished,” Geary says.

While some of the money for the equipment came from a grant from the Sonora Area Foundation, the majority of funding for equipment comes from Channel 8´s revenue.

“This is from the people who pay five dollars a week to have their bulletin board up there, and who pay ten dollars for a one-hour program. It´s all been done with our income,” Garside points out.

Cassina High was showing off its new television studio Tuesday evening for an open house event. Two programs have been produced successfully so far.
