Zinfandel Named ‘Historic’ Wine Despite Sour Grapes
Sponsored by:
Sacramento, CA — Senators voted to make zinfandel California´s official historic wine today, despite sour grapes by some lawmakers who nearly defeated the purely symbolic legislation.
Senator Carole Migden originally wanted to name zinfandel the state wine. But opposition forced her to the historic designation.
The measure was sent to Assembly on a 21-12 roll call with no votes to spare. Zinfandel grapes date from Gold Rush days, are widely grown only in California, and are grown in every California wine region.
But growers who favor other grapes objected to the designation.
