New Jail In The Works For Calaveras
San Andreas, CA — A new jail is in the works for Calaveras County now that a consultant has been hired to begin site work on the facility.
Tuesday the Board of Supervisors hired TRG Consulting for $245,000 to come up with an architectural program and conceptual design for a 240-bed jail and sheriff´s administration building.
When the jail was built in 1963, it could fit 47 inmates to serve the population of 11,000. Since then, the county´s population has more than quadrupled and the jail now allows 65 inmates.
The Grand Jury has reported that due to the jail´s limited capacity, inmates are routinely released early, causing it to become a felon only facility.
The design work is scheduled to be complete by April 18.
