Ballot Measure Would Prohibit State From Leaning On Local Government

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — A coalition of groups representing local government agencies has filed an initiative to the Attorney General’s Office for a ballot measure that would block the state from taking gas tax revenues and Highway User Tax funds.

In July, the Governor’s budget revision included a plan to borrow $2 billion from local governments with the agreement that the funds be paid back with interest by 2013.

The ballot initiative is being supported by groups like the League of California Cities and the California State Association of Counties.

If enough signatures are collected, the measure will go on the ballot in 2010.
