Eighty Year Old Groveland Man Ready To Lead Hike
The annual Mt. Hoffman hike with Frank Oyung and the Sierra Club will take place this Sunday.
Oyung was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Each year Oyung celebrates his birthday by hiking Mt Hoffman inside of Yosemite National Park. This year just happens to be Oyung’s 80th birthday.
The public is invited to hike with both Oyung and the Sierra Club.
Those who are interested in this hike need to arrive at Mary Laveroni Park in Groveland by 8 AM this Sunday October 9th.
Professional hikers will make sure that you’ve got the proper equipment to join in on this 3.5 mile roundtrip hike (which could increase to 5.5 miles if there is snow near May Lake).
Mt. Hoffman’s elevation is 10,800 feet. The trailhead begins at 8,200 feet.
Oyung said, “When I lead hikes, I do not charge anyone to hike with me nor do you have to be a Sierra Club member in order to participate.”
Those who want to hike should bring a sack lunch, a liter of water, snacks, a hiking staff, proper layered clothing and footwear that can handle slush or snow on portions of the trail.
For more information, Oyung can be reached at (209) 962-7585.
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
