Cell Phone Scam Warning
Jamestown, CA– A cell phone scam has made its way to the Mother Lode.
Golden State Cellular is warning local consumers of fraudulent activity that has been reported by cellular carriers across the country.
The scam works by having an individual call a random cell phone customer and announce that they are a representative of the company. They usually offer a prize or a discount. The caller then asks to verify account information such as name, password or last four digits of a social security number.
Armed with the proper information, they then call the cell phone carrier and represent themselves as the customer and request changes to the account allowing them access.
Golden State Cellular is urging consumers to be cautious when receiving any call requesting this type of information. They say that the easiest way to confirm the caller’s identity is to ask for their name and number and tell them you will call them back.
Golden State Cellular customers for instance, would be instructed to call 611 from their GSC phone or to contact the call center at 1-800-453-8255. The phone numbers are also confirmed on the GSC web page.
