The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra Nevada above 5000 feet, effective from 2 PM this afternoon to 10 AM Friday.
A fast moving Pacific Storm System is forecast to move through Northern California this afternoon and tonight. This system will bring moderate to occasionally heavy snowfall to the mountains beginning this afternoon and lasting through early Friday morning, with the heaviest snowfall falling over the nighttime hours.
Snow levels will generally range between 4,000 and 5,000 feet.
Total snow accumulations will range from five to ten inches.
Gusty winds and possible blowing snow is expected.
Snow showers are likely to end by mid day Friday but another storm system is on track to move through Northern California late Friday and Saturday.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will primarily cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for limited visibility and slippery snow covered roads. Carry tire chains and extra supplies if traveling to the higher elevations or through the Sierra passes. Use caution while driving.
