House Water Legislation Would Impact Region
Washinton, DC — Republicans from California have introduced Congressional legislation that would implement big changes related to water.
HR 2898, the “Western Water and American Food Safety Act,” is being pushed regional representatives like Congressmen Jeff Denham and Tom McClintock. They argue that dedicating large amounts of water to protect fish protected by the Endangered Species Act is an obstacle to delivering water in the state, and the legislation proposes changes that would give agencies new direction and more flexibility. It’s also designed to “cut red tape” that has delayed major water storage projects over recent decades.
In addition, there is a proposal in the bill that calls for moving toward the transfer of ownership of New Melones Reservoir from the federal government to interested local agencies.
