Veterans Day Weekend Activities

This weekend is Veterans Day weekend. Monday November 11th is a Federal and State Holiday that salutes, recognizes and honors our Nation’s service veterans.

Frank Smart, a local veterans activist, was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

According to Smart, one of the larger recognitions will take place this Saturday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sonora. The ceremony begins at 10:45am and every veteran is invited. There will be food, music, speeches and presentations.

Sunday morning, the Sonora Emblem Club will host a Veterans Breakfast from 8am through 11am at the Sonora Elks Lodge. There will also be a bake and craft sale. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children twelve and younger.

Monday morning at 11am, there will be a Veterans Day Remembrance in the historic cemetary at Columbia State Historic Park. The Columbia Foot Dragoons invite the public to this free event.

On Monday night in Murphys, there will be a Veterans Dinner at the Native Sons Hall beginning at 5:30pm. The dinner is free for veterans and $8 for the general public.

On Tuesday November 12th, Soroptimist International of Twain Harte will honor women veterans of the armed forces and those currently serving ,with a luncheon at the Twain Harte Golf Course from noon thorugh 1pm. The cost is $15 and those wanting to attend are encouraged to call Margie at 586-3222. 

Yosemite National Park and all other National Parks will waive the admission and day-use fees this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

All federal and state offices will be closed Monday. Courts are closed. The post office is closed. Most full service banks will be closed this Holiday.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard every weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:45, 7:45 and 8:45am.
