Cal Poly Student Injured By Combat Robot

Sponsored by:

Two people were hurt when an entry in a student-built combat robot competition careened out of control at Cal Poly Pomona.

A steel part was sent into a crowd.

Treated for cuts and released from a hospital were Carl Jappert, a senior mechanical engineering major taking part in yesterday´s competition, and 20-year-old Charise Jappert.

The accident occurred during a “PolyBots” competition on a walkway behind an engineering complex. About 150 people were watching the contest, which was modeled after the television show “BattleBots.”

The 60-pound robot that broke was dubbed Superior. Powered by a gas motor, Superior´s moving appendage was a three-foot metal bar on top that whirled like helicopter rotors.
