Supreme Court To Rule On Recall

Sponsored by:

California´s Supreme Court is expected to announce Thursday how it plans to handle several challenges to the October seventh recall. Among those petitions is one that would bar replacement candidates from the recall ballot.

Senator Barbara Boxer has urged the justices to make a ruling before Saturday. That´s the deadline for challengers to file their candidacy.

About 400 would-be governors have taken out nomination papers, but very few have turned them in.

The petitions challenge various aspects of the recall. One petition argues that Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante should automatically become governor if Davis is recalled. Experts say that would hurt public interest because the recall would become a vote between two Democrats.
