The Memorial Day weekend got off to a sad start in Yosemite National Park following the drowning death of a young man who fell into the Merced River. Friends and witnesses say the man was taking photos near Vernal Falls Thursday when he slipped into the water.
Park rangers found his body yesterday as they searched the river corridor between the Vernal Fall footbridge and Happy Isles.
Park officials say late rains and snow in April — along with warm weather in May — created dangerously high water levels in the area. The man´s identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
