Movement Against Davis Recall Starts Today

Governor Davis´ allies are scheduled to launch a campaign today outside a Sacramento fire station to block a Republican led effort to recall the Democratic governor.
A longtime senior Davis adviser, Steve Smith, will serve as campaign manager for “Taxpayers Against the Recall.” The involvement of Smith suggests Davis is taking the recall seriously after months of playing it down. But Davis adviser Roger Salazar says the governor´s focus “is on doing the work that he´s being paid to do.”
The recall drive was started this winter by Republican activists who claim the unpopular governor misled the public about the state´s record budget deficit and mishandled the energy crisis.
