Change Of License Plates Doesn’t Fool Law Enforcement

Sponsored by:

Sonora, Ca — A Sonora man thought he could fool law enforcement by putting different license plates on his stolen vehicle.

41 year old James Benites was arrested this past weekend after a corporal ran the plates on a 1994 Pontiac Grand AM and found they belong on a 1993 Toyota sedan.

Benites was stopped at the intersection of Johnny Road and Jamestown Road. The suspect also had an outstanding bench warrant for his arrest on drug and other vehicle charges.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department reports that he was not forthcoming about where he obtained the vehicle. In other words, they were not sure who is the owner of the stolen vehicle.

Benites was transported to the Tuolumne County Jail.
