Mother Lode Residents Walk Away From Plane Crash

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — 90 minutes following the Sunday noon hour, the Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department received a call regarding a plane crash on Kistler Ranch.

Once on scene, deputies learned that 57 year old Douglas Curry and 56 year old Whitten Leigh-Curry had experienced engine problems with their 1978 Gruman Tiger. The engine literally blew sending oil onto the windshield. At the same time the cockpit filled with smoke.

The pair performed an emergency landing at the ranch which has an approved emergency landing strip. They overshot the landing strip and crashed through a fence totaling the plane.

Neither of the occupants was injured.
