Governor Announces Plans For Education Budget

Wednesday, January 04, 2006 - 12:50 PM

Sacramento, CA -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's adding about $4.3 billion to the state's education budget in the upcoming fiscal year.

The increase will be applied to California's K through 12 and community college systems.

Education Secretary Alan Bersin says the increase will put the per-pupil spending amount at more than $11,000, which surpasses the state mandate for public education.

The proposed budget includes increased funding for music and art programs, as well as physical education.

The governor also plans to put up nearly $430 million to fund Proposition 49, passed by voters to provide after school programs to students.

Teacher training will also get its slice of budget funding with a proposed $1.5 million. The governor is expected to release his budget Tuesday.
