Missile Launch Illuminated Mother Lode Sky

Sponsored by:

Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA — If you saw a bright light in the sky this morning other than the sun, don´t worry, you are not alone.

Thousands of California residents reported sightings as well. So what was it? Officials at the Vandenberg Air Force Base say it was the successfully testing of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Minuteman Three´s dummy warhead blasted off at six o´clock from Vandenberg Air Force Base and traveled 5,100 miles in 30 minutes, hitting a predetermined target near Guam in the western Pacific Ocean.

The test´s main purpose was to demonstrate the weapon´s accuracy at extended range. The base typically tests about five Minuteman missiles a year.
