Sponsored by:

Angels Camp, CA – State public health officials say California is facing a whooping cough epidemic, and Calaveras County now has its first confirmed case of the year.

The Calaveras County Health Department says a 66 year old resident of Angels Camp has whooping cough, also known as pertussis.

In California there have been over 900 cases of whooping cough reported this year, and five deaths. All five deaths were infants. This is four times the number of pertussis cases reported in 2009. An additional 600 cases statewide are under investigation.

Increases in whooping cough cases are the highest in the Central Valley and Bay Area.
