Boat Rescue Spurs Warning From Calaveras Officials

Sponsored by:

Valley Springs, CA — A group of boaters on Lake Camanche learned the hard way that the weather can shift quickly this time of the year.

This past Sunday a boat with seven passengers became stranded on the lake after the vessel’s engine failed. When the day started there were clear skies and mild conditions, but by 5:30 pm there was hail, high wind. and heavy rainfall. The sheriff’s office was notified and reports that the sudden change resulted in 2-3 foot swells that complicated the emergency response.

The sheriff’s office adds that the boaters had insufficient safety equipment and one of the passengers on board was pregnant.

A patrol boat located the distressed boaters near the shoreline and provided additional floatation devices, and escorted everyone to safety.

The sheriff’s office has put out the following safety reminders.

  • Monitor Weather Conditions: Always stay updated on the weather, especially when on the water, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Proper Safety Equipment: Ensure that your boat is equipped with enough PFDs for all passengers and that they are easily accessible.
  • Emergency Protocols: Be prepared for unexpected situations with a well-thought-out emergency plan.
  • Communication: Keep a reliable means of communication for emergencies and inform others of your boating itinerary.
  • Compliance: Understand and comply with all relevant boating regulations to promote safety for everyone on the water. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the lake’s changing conditions and the need for preparedness. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reiterates the call for all boaters to prioritize safety, ensuring a pleasant and secure experience on Lake Camanche.
