State prison officials say they want to build new death row facilities.
The state´s original death row at San Quentin State Prison was designed to hold 68. But the number these days is closer to 600.
Officials had talked about moving death row out of San Quentin. They also had considered closing the 150-year-old prison. But those plans ran into opposition. Officials now are considering asking for $200 million for renovations. The money would be used to build two new facilities for the condemned at San Quentin. Officials would also upgrade the medical facility.
