Lawmaker Wants Smoking Age Raised

Sponsored by:

A bill has been introduced in Sacramento to raise the legal smoking age in California to 21.

Assemblyman Paul Koretz is a Democrat from West Hollywood, and says his legislation to raise the legal smoking age will protect the youth of California. He says doing that would lead the rest of the nation in protecting young people from the dangers of tobacco.

Right now, California, along with most states, has a legal smoking age of 18. Only three states have a higher legal smoking age of 19. No state has adopted a legal smoking age of 21.
