The University of California at Davis says the monkey missing from a research lab is presumed dead and believed to be lost in the sewer.
School officials say they reached that conclusion after handlers passed a lie detector test and police ruled the monkey was not stolen. The disease-free monkey escaped two weeks ago while workers were cleaning cages at the California National Primate Research Center. Workers who reported a slurping sound say they believe the monkey slipped down a drain.
The incident fueled community criticism about security at a proposed bio-defense lab on campus that would study the world´s deadliest diseases. The university says security would be much higher at the proposed lab.
