Man Dies After Lake Yosemite Boat Wreck

Sponsored by:

A man died at Lake Yosemite on Sunday when his boat spun out of control at a speed of over 200 miles per hour.

John Hipwell, from New Jersey, was a dragboat racer who was trying to set a world speed record in a race of the International Hot Boat Association.

He suffered fatal injuries to his head and body just before 3pm Sunday afternoon.

The race was part of a weekend-long event at Lake Yosemite, held annually.

One witness to the crash said nothing appeared to be wrong and the conditions were perfect at the time the accident happened.

Hipwell is the first man to die in seven years, according to the International Hot Boat Association.
