East Union Football Player In Critical Condition

Manteca, CA — A high school football player is in critical condition after suffering a brain contusion during a weekend football game.
Mathew Van Gelderen, a student at East Union High School in Manteca, was hurt Friday night while making a block on a kickoff return during game with Bear Creek High School in Stockton.
The 16-year-old Van Gelderen went down when he and a player on an opposing team ran into each other head-on.
Medical crews worked on Van Gelderen for about ten minutes on the field until he lost consciousness.
