Committees Reject Bills Barring Obesity Suits Against Restaurants
Sacramento, CA — Committees in the Assembly and Senate have rejected bills that would bar lawsuits blaming restaurants and other food providers for weight gain or health problems caused by long-term consumption.
The measures by Senator Sam Aanestad of Grass Valley and Assemblyman Guy Houston of San Ramon went down to defeat this afternoon in the Senate and Assembly judiciary committees.
Supporters say the bills would promote individual responsibility and common sense.
But opponents say the validity of lawsuits should be decided by the courts on a case-by-case basis and that granting immunity to one industry could lead to the same type of request from other businesses.
