State And Local Political Leaders’ React To Charlie Kirk Assassination
Sonora, CA — California and Mother Lode political leaders are reacting to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of President Donald Trump.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed at a campus event at Utah Valley University. Governor Gavin Newsom called the attack disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. He issued this statement: “We should all feel a deep sense of grief and outrage at the terrible violence that took place in Utah today. Charlie Kirk’s murder is sick and reprehensible, and our thoughts are with his family, children, and loved ones.” Kick was a guest on Newsom’s podcast earlier this year. Newsom added, “I knew Charlie, and I admired his passion and commitment to debate. His senseless murder is a reminder of how important it is for all of us, across the political spectrum, to foster genuine discourse on issues that deeply affect us all without resorting to political violence. The governor ended the statement, saying, “The best way to honor Charlie’s memory is to continue his work: engage with each other, across ideology, through spirited discourse. In a democracy, ideas are tested through words and good-faith debate—never through violence. Honest disagreement makes us stronger; violence only drives us further apart and corrodes the values at the heart of this nation.”
Mother Lode Congressman Tom McClintock also remarked on social media, “Charlie Kirk has fearlessly put his life on the line on college campuses across America to advance the civil and peaceful discussion of the issues we face. This was an attack that strikes at the heart of our democracy.” Democrat Senator Alex Padilla wrote on social media, “America was founded on the freedom to disagree. Political violence has no place in our democracy. The shooting of Charlie Kirk is reprehensible and sickening. I am praying for him and his family during this time.”
Stating that “our democracy is strongest when rooted in respect, civility, and peace.” Mother Lode State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil asked the public, “Please join me in prayer for Charlie Kirk’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
Additionally, the Tuolumne County Republican Party put out a statement noting that they were deeply shocked and troubled by the senseless act of violence, sharing, “We reiterate in the strongest terms: any act of political violence is inexcusable, unjustified, and has no place in our Republic. Political discourse, no matter how heated, must never devolve into violence. The Tuolumne County Republican Party reaffirms our commitment to civil dialogue, mutual respect, and the rule of law, and encourages everyone to do the same. As details emerge, we call on citizens across the political spectrum to remain calm, exercise restraint, and uphold the highest standards of decency while awaiting answers.”
