Setting Fires For Public Safety

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The public may spot smoke in the skies over the Calaveras Ranger District next week as Stanislaus National Park officials indicate crews will be igniting flames for the public’s safety.

The Irish/O’Manuel Prescribed Burn will be sparked about a mile west of Arnold, along County Road 323 Valley View Road. 34 acres will be burned in various sizes in a mosaic pattern beginning Tuesday, May 29th and lasting into June as weather, fuel moisture and air quality conditions permit. The goal of this burn is to reduce buildup of flammable forest fuels to improve protection of the Arnold area from devastating wildfires, according to forest officials.

Smoke may be visible from Highway 4 and the surrounding communities, such as Arnold.  Fire managers ask that the public not report this prescribed burn as a wildland fire.
