State Utilities Commission Approves Solar Energy Program

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The California Public Utilities Commission has approved a new multi-billion dollar program to increase the production of solar power across the state.

The commission is investing nearly $3 billion into the California Solar Initiative in an effort to generate 3000 megawatts of solar power by the 2016.

The electricity would come from roof-mounted solar panels on about 1 million homes and businesses. The program would offer $3 billion in rebates to those who have the panels installed.

The commission says funding for the program will be provided by an increase in utility rates.

The program would make California the third largest producer of solar power in the world.
