Bugs Are Bugging Reno

Sponsored by:

A few weeks ago, it was moths that were descending on northern Nevada. Before that, it was Mormon crickets. Now it´s cicadas.

For the last couple of weeks, adult cicadas emerged from the ground and took flight across the region in a brief mission of procreation. And they did so in mass.

State entomologist Jeff Knight says people are talking about hundreds of thousands of them in their trees, and he believes them. Knight has been receiving 10 to 15 telephone calls per day from people curious about cicadas.

In Nevada, there are 23 different species of cicadas. The reason so many are being noticed now is that several different species are now flying around at once.
