Update: Fiery Deadly Pile-up Shuts Down Section Of Hwy 108

Update at 9:15 p.m.: The CHP has updated that the four-vehicle collision involving a head-on crash on Highway 108 in Sonora near the lower Mono Way on-ramp has turned deadly. One fatality is being reported by the CHP. The highway was shut down for more than three hours from South Washington Street to the lower Mono Way off-ramp and just reopened in the 9 o’clock hour. Update at 9 p.m.: The CHP reports that Highway 108 has reopened to traffic after a pile-up involving four vehicles that closed the roadway from South Washington Street to the lower Mono Way off-ramp. There remains no update on injuries. Further details on the crash are below.

Update at 8:40 p.m.: The CHP reports that Highway 108 in Sonora, which is close from South Washington Street to the lower Mono Way off-ramp will reopen in about 15 minutes. There is still no update on possible injuries in the fiery head-on crash. Further details on the collision can be viewed below.

Update at 7:35 p.m.: The CHP remains on the scene of a fiery four-vehicle crash on Highway 108 in the westbound lanes on Highway 108 near the lower Mono Way on-ramp behind the Crossroads Shopping Center in Sonora. The roadway has been shut down for about two hours and officers are redirecting traffic onto South Washington Street and the lower Mono Way off-ramp. The CHP has not given an estimated time as to when the roadway may reopen, as tow crews continue to work to remove the wreckage. Further details on the crash are below.

Update at 6:55 p.m.:  CHP officers continue to direct traffic after a four-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes on Highway 108 near the lower Mono Way on-ramp behind the Crossroads Shopping Center in Sonora. There remains no word on injuries at this time. The CHP reports that section of roadway is closed with officers continuing to direct traffic onto South Washington Street and the lower Mono Way off-ramp.

The crash happened in the westbound lane just before 5:30 p.m. Two of the vehicles hit head-on and were fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on the scene. The CHP details that one vehicle went 80 feet down an embankment and another 50 feet off the roadway. Tow crews are working to remove the vehicles causing a backup in traffic.

CAL Fire officials relay that the flames did not spread to any nearby vegetation.

Original post at 6:05 p.m.: Sonora, CA — First responders are on the scene of a collision involving four vehicles on Highway 108 near the lower Mono Way on-ramp in Sonora.

The CHP is reporting that two of the vehicle were fully engulfed in flames and ambulances have been called to the scene. One of the vehicles went 80 feet down an embankment and another 50 feet off the roadway.

CAL Fire reports that the flames have not spread to any vegetation as of yet. An update will be provided as soon as new information comes into the newsroom.
