Drive-by Shooting Motive Unknown

Authorities are still at a loss for a motive behind a drive-by shooting that took place in Valley Springs on Aug. 20.

Jeffery R. Walter, 39, of Valley Springs, allegedly tailgated a car from Wallace to Valley Springs about 10 p.m., then threatened the other vehicle´s occupants with a hand-gun when they both stopped at an intersection, according to a report from Deputy Chris Villegas.

The other car´s occupants, Dawn Marie Kerlin, 18, and Jonathon Lee Crispin, 21, both of Valley Springs, pulled into the Valley Springs Mini Mart, at which point Walter then fired at them, Villegas said.

The couple pulled out behind Walter to get his license and he allegedly fired at them several more times between Valley Springs and Vista Del Lago Drive.

Walter was stopped and arrested after he passed Deputy Mike Whitney, who was taking a statement from the victims at the time, Villegas said. Walter remains in jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.

Kerlin and Crispin said they do not know Walter, and that he just came up behind their car as they were passing through Wallace, Villegas said, adding that the suspect refuses to discuss the incident.

A handgun believed used in the shooting was discovered in a nearby ditch Aug. 21 by a PG&E crew.

Walter faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats. He is in custody at the Calaveras County Jail on $60,000 bail.
