No Passwords To The Public Allowed

Sacramento, CA –The state Senate has approved a bill that would make it illegal for employers and college admissions officers to ask workers or students for their social media passwords.

Senators approved SB1349 by Sen. Leland Yee on a 28-5 vote Friday. The Democratic lawmaker says social media is a repository of personal, private information that most people never imagined would be open to the public.

Calaveras County Republican Senator, Ted Gaines, says he supports the intent of the bill but is concerned that it’s too broad. He said it might prohibit an employer from investigating claims of employee harassment before they escalate.

Yee’s bill now moves to the state Assembly which already passed another bill dealing with the same issue.
