Sonora Man Tries To Escape From Hospital To Avoid Arrest

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – A Sonora man fled a local hospital emergency room to avoid arrest only to be caught by a deputy and then resist being handcuffed.

A recent report of a man outside in the rain and making threats had deputies responding to the area of Paseo De Los Robles near Madre Drive in the Phoenix Lake area. Once on scene, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s deputies detained 24-year-old Jared ObrienYates after conducting an under-the-influence test on him. They determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Once at the jail, officials requested a deputy take ObrienYates to a local hospital for medical clearance. While in the emergency room, his handcuffs were removed so the medical staff could treat him.

“After over a half hour being complaint while at the hospital, ObrienYates suddenly ran away from the deputy towards the exit while ignoring commands to stop,” detailed sheriff spokesperson Ashley Boujikian, adding, “The deputy caught up to ObrienYates and began trying to handcuff him. He pushed and kicked the deputy, who, after a short struggle with the suspect, was able to place him back into handcuffs.”

ObrienYates was arrested for felony attempting to escape custody with force, misdemeanor battery on a peace officer, and being under the influence of a drug.
