Eight new charges have been filed against a Mother Lode area man arrested Friday who was found with a lethal mixture of guns, explosives, and hazardous materials.

Forty-four-year-old Michael Klaus Specht was arrested in Tuolumne Friday. During a traffic stop, Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department Deputies found two handguns, 30 small homemade explosives, and a substantial quantity of liquid mercury in his possession.

Specht plead not guilty during his arraignment Monday afternoon in Tuolumne County Superior Court.

Deputies stopped Specht for having an unreadable license plate, but, since Specht -a convicted felon – had been found guilty of a weapons charge in 1997, officers were able to search his car. Specht reportedly told deputies that he´d been experimenting with loading bullet tips with mercury.

A Tuolumne County D.A.´s office spokeswoman says a hearing set for next Wednesday, March 17th.
