Police Impersonator Scamming Mother Lode

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A law enforcement impersonator is on the loose in the Mother Lode according the California Highway Patrol.

Tom Wills with the CHP says a man was stopped in the Jamestown area this morning by someone claiming to be a Sonora Police Officer.

Wills says the impersonator was driving a white Ford Taurus with a red light on the dashboard. The man who was stopped by the impersonator says the man was in his 30´s, dressed in black with what looked like a badge on his belt line.

He told the driver he was speeding and said he could pay the fine on the spot; otherwise he would issue him a ticket. Wills says the driver became suspicious and told the man he did not have any money on him.

At that point the impersonator went back to his car, wrote out what looked like a ticket and asked the driver to sign it. Wills is advising motorists to use caution when pulling over for officers.
