Lakes Fire In Yosemite Expands To 145 Acres

Yosemite, CA — A lightning caused fire that was first spotted on July 7 in Yosemite National Park is up to 145 acres. It is believed that the fire actually ignited on June 12 when lightning was reported in the area.
The Lakes Fire is situated in the Chilnualna Lakes area, between Turner Meadow and Buena Vista Peak. The fire is not being actively suppressed and is instead being managed for ecological benefits. The National Park Service reports lightning fires play a vital role in shaping the fire dependent ecosystem.
It is in a very remote area near the Mariposa County and Madera County line. The fire has expanded into the region of the 1999 Chil Fire and has been most active on the northeast and south edge of the perimeter.
