Mid September Events

There are several celebrations this weekend, here is a list of the bigger events on our events calendar for Saturday, September 20th.

The Yosemite Highway 120 Chamber of Commerce will host their largest event of the year in Groveland; the annual 49er Festival and Chili Cook-off. A parade, music, food and celebrating aims to attract visitors throughout the day to support the local community. The Tuolumne County “Historic Trolley Bus” will be shuttling festival goers for free from the Tenaya Elementary School, Yosemite Bank and Mountain Leisure Center parking lots to the Mary Laveroni Park 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM. 25th Annual Quilt and Threads Show will be held at the Mother Lode Fair Grounds tomorrow and Sunday. The theme is “Christmas in the Sierras” admission is $8.00.

Back to School Night at Columbia is from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, view and participate in a Back to School Night from 1861 at the Old Columbia Schoolhouse in Columbia State Historic Park. Music, school lessons from the past and tours of the school are led by costumed docents. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a blanket or chairs to enjoy the summer evening. Sunday is the 42nd Annual Columbia Fine Art Show as well.

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park will celebrate, recognize, and honor the hundreds of current and former Sierra Railway, Sierra Railroad and Railtown workers, their descendants and family members.  Park visitors will be invited to post stories and photographs on a “Memory Wall” that will become part of the permanent Park collection. The Great Sierra River Cleanup is held in conjunction with California Coastal Cleanup Day is this weekend. The volunteer event is focused on removing trash and restoring the health of waterways throughout the Sierra Nevada Region. This year’s clean-up will focus on sites around New Melones, as declining water levels reveal more and more trash. More details and contact information to sign up is available here.

CHP Sonora Area office is having a free car seat safety check up event at the Sonora Regional Medical Center on Saturday from 10:00am to 2pm.
