As part of a year-long 50th Anniversary Celebration, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are proud to present “The Wine & Cheese Zephyr,” a blast from the not-so-distant past. To be held on Friday, September 17, 2021, this unique evening event will feature a selection of cheeses, wines, and memories-in-the-making.
Even though the Sierra Railroad had been in business since 1897, it was not until May of 1971 that the facility at Jamestown was opened to the public. Named “Rail Town 1897,” the railroad marketed the Jamestown rail complex as a one-of-a-kind destination, providing fun and nostalgia for the whole family. During the 1970s, special themed trains were created at Rail Town, including the popular “Wine and Cheese Zephyr” train. The historic facility at Jamestown became a part of the California State Parks system in the early 1980s, and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park continues the Sierra Railroad’s legacy of creating lasting and memorable experiences. Throughout 2021, Railtown is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a tourist destination with a series of special events all year, giving visitors some unique opportunities to experience the feel and romance of the past half-century.
“The Wine & Cheese Zephyr” last ran in the mid-1990s, but Railtown 1897 has brought it back for a special one-time-only event. Guests will be treated to a selection of special cheeses, wine pairings, and a delectable dessert. This intimate event is limited to 50 passengers, for a scenic evening ride with the railroad’s historic Sierra No. 28 steam locomotive. During the ride, passengers may wander through historic railroad cars and listen to music, while enjoying the beautiful foothills of the Mother Lode region at sunset. The train departs from the Railtown depot at 7 p.m., for a leisurely two-hour ride.
This event is being held in compliance with all state, city and county COVID-19 guidelines and masks are required on all train rides. Space is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets cost $60 each and can be purchased online at www.railtown1897.org.
Visitors are also encouraged to plan a day at the Park to enjoy a guided tour, a picnic under the Park’s shady oak trees, or a trip on one of the weekend “Mother Lode Cannonball” excursion train rides. For more information on these fun and family-friendly experiences, visitors should call Railtown 1897 SHP at 209-983-3953.
