Failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) encounters violent thugs while wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a clown. Ridicule, abuse and no money for his medication beg for sympathy even as Fleck begins a slow descent to homicidal maniac/criminal mastermind known as the Joker.
