The 49er Chancel Ringers of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, better known as the Church of the 49ers, will present a concert on Sunday, June 23rd, beginning at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary. The church is located at 11155 Jackson Street in Columbia (Parrotts Ferry Road and Jackson Street).

While the 49er Church had bell choirs for decades many years ago, early this year Doreen Bass was asked to help reestablish an English handbell ensemble to play for worship. Formerly the bell choir director at Sierra Bible Church, today she is overjoyed to be ringing and arranging music for the 49er Chancel Ringers. Doreen said, “Together we want to ring our praises for the glory of the Lord, to grow musically and spiritually, and to have fun! Our selections for this concert demonstrate the beauty and versatility of handbells.”

If you love to hear, and watch, handbells being played, this concert is for you. Featuring hymns and songs arranged for two treble octaves by Director Doreen Bass, eight ringers will display their artistry and enthusiasm, and demonstrate various handbell techniques, such as the ring, shake, martellato, swing, echo, thumb damp and mallets. As we’re nearing the 4th of July, some familiar patriotic songs are included also. There is no charge for the concert, though donations are welcome to help offset expenses. Following the music-making, all are invited to Faith Hall for a reception. For more information, call 532-6604.
